What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy therapy is a non-invasive treatment of the musculoskeletal system – the bones, tendons, cartilage, ligaments, and connective tissues of the body – using physical therapy manipulation techniques. When the body’s musculoskeletal system is not aligned properly, its ability to heal itself reduces. This is because the function of the circulatory, lymphatic, and nervous systems is inhibited. Osteopathy therapy aims to restore this natural healing ability of the body by improving alignment and function.

While treating a patient using osteopathy therapy, practitioners use various stretching, pressure, massage, mobilisation, and manipulation techniques.

What are the types of Osteopathy?

Cranial Osteopathy: During cranial osteopathy, gentle pressure is applied along the head and spine to reduce stress, strain, or pressure that may affect overall health and the nervous system. This form of osteopathy therapy enhances blood supply to tissues. In cranial osteopathy, brain areas are palpated and subtle vibrations are applied to the head, helping relax the entire body. It is also known as craniosacral osteopathy.

Visceral Osteopathy: Visceral osteopathy focuses on treating the viscera, i.e., the internal organs located within the rib cage, abdominal cavity, and pelvic region. This specialized osteopathy therapy improves each organ’s mobility within its natural position to promote better functioning. Visceral osteopathy is beneficial for individuals suffering from IBS, infertility, painful menstrual cycles, digestive issues, acid reflux, and constipation.

Structural: In structural osteopathy, bone structures and muscles are gently guided back into proper alignment using light, relaxed movements combined with muscle relaxation techniques. This type of osteopathy therapy helps reduce body pain, increase joint flexibility, and relieve stiffness and fatigue. It can be taken once a month for general wellness, or more frequently based on the practitioner’s recommendation.
