Osteopathy

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a non-invasive treatment of the musculoskeletal system – the bones, tendons, cartilage, ligaments and connective tissues of the body – using Physical Therapy manipulation techniques. When the body’s musculoskeletal system is not aligned properly its ability to heal itself reduces. This is because the function of circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems is   inhibited. Osteopathy aims to restore this ability of the body’s musculoskeletal system.

While treating a patient using Osteopathy the doctors use various stretching, pressure, massage, mobilisation and manipulation techniques.

What are the types of Osteopathy?

Cranial Osteopathy: During Cranial Osteopathy pressure is applied along the head and the spine to reduce any sort of stress, strain or pressure that might be affecting the patient’s overall health and nervous system. This form of Physical Therapy enhances blood supply to the tissues. In Cranial Osteopathy, the brain areas are palpated/felt and vibrations are given to the head, which relaxes the whole body. It is also known as Craniosacral Osteopathy.

Visceral Osteopathy: Visceral Osteopathy aims to treat the viscera i.e the internal body parts that are located within the rib cage, abdominal cavity, and the pelvic cavity. Visceral Osteopathy focuses on each organ’s mobility within their natural position/place in our body to promote better functioning. It is said to be beneficial for people suffering from IBS, infertility, painful menstrual cycles, digestive issues, acid reflux and constipation.

Structural: In Structural Osteopathy, the bone structures and muscles are aligned to their normal place by motion in easy and relaxed, light thrusts, in combination with muscle relaxation. Structural Osteopathy helps to reduce body pain, increase flexibility of joints and reduce stiffness and fatigue. It can be taken at least once in a month by anyone who is looking to enhance their body functions. Incase of pains and difficulties, the frequency of the treatment can be increased according to the Osteopathy practitioner.
